How to plan your International move

Moving homes is an exciting adventure, but it can also be a whirlwind of logistics and decision-making. Between packing, coordinating movers, and navigating your new neighborhood, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Moving isn’t just a logistical challenge – it’s also one of life’s most stressful events. It disrupts your routine and brings uncertainty, which naturally triggers anxiety. “Home” is deeply emotional, tied to memories and comfort. So while moving can stir feelings of loss or fear, it also holds space for excitement, growth, and new beginnings.

Whether you’re moving to a new city for just a few years or making a more permanent change, creating a well-designed space will help you settle in, relax, and enjoy life in a new place. There are things you can do before, during and after your move to help transform your new space into a home that reflects your unique style and maximizes its potential. Having lived in 3 countries and moved more than 10 times (and counting), I know what it’s like to pack up a home and get set up in a new one. I actually love the process, and have learned many lessons over the years. Here’s my step-by-step guide to help you approach your move with clarity, from before you pack the boxes to the moment you’re settling in.

Before the Move

While professional movers and online checklists help, the planning and packing process is often stressful. As a result, many people just bring everything with them and hope it works out. Unfortunately, it often doesn’t – furniture may not fit the new space in size, shape, color, or style. This is especially true for international moves, such as relocating from the U.S. to Belgium.

  • Evaluate what to bring (and what to leave behind)
Homes in a new country often have different layouts, sizes, and design aesthetics. What worked in your previous home may not always translate well into your new space. Take measurements of your key furniture pieces and consider the architectural style and dimensions of your new home. This is a great time to declutter and be intentional about what you bring.
  • Research the local design culture
Every country has its own design sensibilities and practical considerations. For example, in Belgium, closets and built-in storage isn’t as common, and space tends to be more compact. Familiarize yourself with local storage solutions, electrical systems, and even mattress sizes before purchasing or bringing items.
  • Get a floor plan if possible
A floor plan allows you to plan furniture placement in advance. If you can’t get one, use photos or video walkthroughs to help visualize the space. This is especially helpful for deciding what furniture to keep, sell, or replace.

During the Move

If you’re shipping your belongings by sea, it may take weeks or even months to receive them, and you may not remember exactly what you brought with. Putting in a bit of extra effort when packing can make unpacking much easier later.

  • Label everything thoughtfully
Clearly label boxes by room and content, and mark anything fragile. Create a separate “essentials” box with items you’ll need immediately (bedding, a few kitchen basics, chargers, etc.). Be ready to tell the movers in which room to put each box.
  • Keep design in mind while packing
Group decor items by room or theme, like family photos, vases and throw pillows. This makes unpacking and styling much easier once you arrive. You’ll be glad you did when trying to quickly turn a blank space into something that feels personal.
  • Stay open to reimagining your furniture
Sometimes a piece might not fit the same way it did before, but that doesn’t mean it won’t work. A bench that used to live at the foot of your bed might work beautifully in an entryway. Stay flexible and think creatively about how to repurpose.

After the Move

Once the movers have unloaded everything from the truck, take a moment before you rush into unpacking every box. Focus on what you need in the immediate term and give yourself time to make it feel like home.

  • Start with function first
Before diving into decor, focus on functionality. Set up essential zones like sleeping, eating, and working areas first. Identify storage needs early so clutter doesn’t pile up. If you have several boxes of books for example, temporarily set them aside to unpack at a later date.
  • Embrace the blank canvas
Give yourself permission to live in the space for a few weeks before making major design decisions. Get a feel for the natural light, how you move through the rooms, and what the home truly needs.
  • Layer in personality slowly
Once the basics are in place, start adding personal touches like artwork, textiles, lighting, and decor. Mix familiar items from your old home with new, locally sourced pieces to create a blend that feels both comforting and fresh.
  • Invest where it matters
Consider investing in custom solutions where necessary, especially if you’re working with challenging layouts or limited storage. Built-ins, multi-functional furniture, and well-planned lighting can dramatically improve how your home looks and feels.
